Summerville Town Council Elections
Posted by Justin Baden May 2nd, 2007 .If you’re a Summerville resident, like me, who’s concerned about where you live and the environmental impact of uncontrolled development, vote for change during the upcoming elections scheduled for May 8th. Currently, the Summerville town council majority vote is controlled by a group of very comfortable incumbents who some might describe as self-serving. If you read the Summerville Journal Scene you’ve probably read an article or two about “adequate facilities ordinances.” You’ve also probably read many letters to the editor concerning the lack of council backbone regarding infrastructure planning when approving new developments. Obviously, you’ll make your own choice about who to vote for, but if you want change, here are a few Go Green recommendations…
Mike Dawson is one of the few current council members who acts with our best interests in mind, not those of real estate developers. He’s up for reelection in District 4 and deserves to stay. In District 2, Diane Frankenberger is a first-time candidate running against long-time council member and custom homebuilder Ricky Waring. Bob Jackson is another first-time candidate in the mix running against Chris Seiber in District 6. Both Frankenberger and Jackson have displayed a willingness to make Summerville’s town council a more responsible group who acts consistently with the best interests of the community in mind.
Many of the candidates will be on hand tonight, May 2nd, at the Perkins on Trolley Rd to meet voters and answer questions. The meeting starts at 7p.m. So get involved, make a difference and vote! If you plan to vote, you must be a registered voter living in a district that is contested in this election and you must bring proof of residency. Also, each district has a different polling place, which is not your normal voting spot so make sure you know where to vote before heading out on May 8th. Here’s a current list of council members along with contact information. I’m sure you can contact any of them for further information about where to vote in your district. This is important to the future of Summerville… spread the word!

It is imperative that we support this grass roots initiative to change the balance of the town council. We need to have four people on the council who care about controlling and planning for growth instead of reacting to it. Otherwise your life in Summerville is going to become a congested living hell. Really soon. These elections historically have been lost by as little as four votes. You can make a difference by your vote. And your neighbor’s vote…And your cousin’s vote. Let’s show everyone that we can do the same thing in Summerville that happened in the Congressional and gubernatorial elections last year. The people spoke. We can speak loud and clear, too if we all tell someone how important this issue is.
This is great info Justin. I think it’s important that people know the professions of city council members [custom homebuilder for example], as it certainly affects their decision making. Let us know how the meetings go!
So I grabbed my two mini go greeners and headed out to the Wednesday night meeting. Diane Frankenberger (District 2), Mike Dawson (District 4), and Bob Jackson (District 6) were all on hand and each addressed the crowd and fielded questions. I was impressed with each of them and implore those of you that live in districts 2, 4, or 6 to go out and vote for these candidates on May 8th. If you don’t live in one of these districts, try to reach friends and family members who do and pass on the recommendations. If you want town council members without conflicts of interest and who make decisions based on what’s best for the community, these three people are the candidates to elect.
During the meeting a number of attendees voiced confusion on where to vote and even what neighborhoods make up the districts. This information is not posted on any Summerville town or city Web site that I can find so here’s some info to help…
District 2 is considered the downtown Summerville area. The Summerville Journal Scene posted a map of this district, which you can find here. If you live in this district, you vote at the following location for this election (yes, it’s different from your normal polling place):
