Time to Get My Freecycle On
Posted by Chad Norman May 16th, 2007 .
I have to admit, I’ve been reading about freecycling for years, but never really got involved. I avoid the landfill by using garage sales, Goodwill, and the ad boards at work, but I suppose that’s not much of a “cycle” if I only give stuff away… I need to try to get some stuff too.
So after a friend sent me some links today, I finally joined. Charleston Freecycle sits on the Yahoo Groups platform, and seems to serve the whole area (though there are groups for Goose Creek and North Charleston too.) They’ve been swapping goods since January of 2004, and things seem healthy with 3873 3874 members. It looks like decent stuff too: humidifiers, oriental rugs, sandboxes, etc. Though there seems to be far too many “Wanted” posts, which appears to be against etiquette.
Anyhoo, I’m off into the great Freecycle beyond. I’ll make an offer first, per etiquitte, but my real goal is to get something…I’ll keep you posted.
Edit: Also in Summerville and Mount Pleasant.

Right on! There’s a group in Summeville too…
FYI, we used this to find a home for stuff that I never thought would have any appeal left — like our old toilet after the renovation or the ancient 15″ computer monitor.
I also use this to collect things we need for elementary school art projects, or old packing material for an elderly friend who supplements her social security checks with eBay. …or cheap plants for the garden, etc.
It’s a great resource!
