Back when buyblue.org was up and running full steam, they had Hess ranked as the top gas station. Their rankings considered environmental impact, political contributions, employment, and one or two other areas, so the overall score pushed them above some of the other guys.

Regardless, I'm glad to see the Sunoco and BP names ... at least I have a choice now!

Hey Lindsey, I couldn't find much on Hess... I guess because they're a smaller company compared to the others on the list. However, I did find the following info discussing environmental impact on their site... check it out and see what you think. It looks like they have accepted that climate change is real but the info also seems full of double-speak and posturing... I'd say stick with Sunoco and BP.

To put all of this into perspective, in the UK, we currently pay roughly £0.95 per litre of petrol.

If you do the maths, and convert that into American figures, it works out at just over $7 per gallon.

Our current car (a Smart) can do about 300 miles on about 6 gallons of fuel - that'd cost us about £20 ($40) to fill up over here, or about $18 at your prices!

Maybe that holds well for my theory that the oil companies are going to maximize profits and cash out in the 5 years leading up to peak oil.

Funny. At lunch today I was reading Business Week and there was a timely article on what Exxon is spending all that profit monies on - buying back their stock.

"Exxon spent 60% or $29 billion of its cash flow on stock repurchases in 2006, more then any other company in the S&P 500."

"They don't need to grow production or order to generate shareholder returns."

"The indirect result: increased pain at the pump for consumers."

Pretty depressing article actually as other big oil companies are taking notice on how successful Exxon has been with buying back their stock.

I was listening to AM radio while driving home last night (and crying as I passed multiple gas stations with $3 plus prices) and they said the biggest reason for the recent increase is mostly because of a lack of refining capacity. We are importing enough oil, but despite all these profits, the oil companies haven't been investing in new refineries and updating old ones. There have been numerous breakdowns and failures lately resulting in 400,000 less barrels of gasoline being refined each day. Sux.

Off course we aren't helping much as demand for gas is higher now then at this point last year. So at what price would you really start thinking about altering your daily/weekly driving habits...$4...$5? I know I was going to head to Greenville this weekend, but it's an extra full tank for the round trip and $50 I don't really have.

Hey, I just got an email giving me one more reason not to buy from ExxonMobil ::

"With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit..."

My plan this afternoon is to find the most convenient BP or Sunoco station on my regular commute. Oh - and my next car is going to be a hybrid (if the electrics haven't made their comeback yet).
