Where Did the Recycling Center Moooove To?

Cow pun aside, when I recently went to my regular recycling spot in West Ashley at St. Andrews Shopping Center, it was gone – vanished into thin air! So recyclables in tow, I scoured the city looking for a new home for my bottles and paperboard. I eventually found an alternate recycling spot, but it sure was an interesting adventure getting there.
According to a representative at Charleston County Solid Waste and Recycling, the removal of that location was spurred by a couple of reasons:
- A lot of residents were simply “dumping” unwanted household items there or leaving recyclables on the ground – not even using the containers. C’mon people, you drove there, braving the pothole-speckled parking lot – the least you could do is lift the lid on the bin instead of doing a drive-by!
- The shopping center is apparently undergoing a renovation and it was only a matter of time before the recycling center had to be relocated anyway.
So in the meantime, while they find another location for that section of W-A, here are a couple of alternatives:
- Ashley Landing Shopping Center; 1401 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard
Note: The recycling bins are located behind the plaza
- St. Andrews Firestation Number 3; 2590 Ashley River Road

Doesn’t it bug you when they move these things? Last Saturday I was out taking photos of the recycling drop sites in Mount Pleasant (for Go Green Maps), and found out they had moved the one at the Bi-Lo. There was no mention of this on their website, and when I called they said it was getting too dirty and people were dropping off non-recyclable materials. Sounds like the same problem you had in West Ashely - I just wish they could update the site.
