Go Green Comment Roundup
Posted by Chad Norman June 13th, 2007 .The life blood of any online community is its user participation, and I have to say I’m blown away by some of your comments on the blog. One of the goals of this site is to bring together people with varying levels of knowledge on green issues, and encourage the sharing and discussion of ideas. I think it’s working!
Thank-you!
With that said, here are some of the amazing things you’ve all be saying…
On Choose Your Gas Station Wisely, cdon says,
Funny. At lunch today I was reading Business Week and there was a timely article on what Exxon is spending all that profit monies on - buying back their stock.
“Exxon spent 60% or $29 billion of its cash flow on stock repurchases in 2006, more then any other company in the S&P 500.” - “They don’t need to grow production or order to generate shareholder returns.” - “The indirect result: increased pain at the pump for consumers.”
Pretty depressing article actually as other big oil companies are taking notice on how successful Exxon has been with buying back their stock.
More good stuff after the jump…
On Whole Foods Using Non-Recyclables, Matthew Gregg says,
Why does Whole Foods have to use any throw away material, recyclable or not, for it’s deli? Other “Earth Friendly” grocers in the area use washable plates, glasses and utensils and recyclable material in the containers for food “to go” from their deli.
My last visit to the Whole Foods deli I noticed that they had a sign on the recycling container that said “do not throw items that contain food”. I mean come on….
On Holy Green!, Dan Dickison says,
That’s mostly true about Circular Congregational Church, but the seeded roof only exists over a new wing to the church’s outbuilding. Nonetheless, it’s a very impressive structure, which was officially opened on Sunday. This new facility was built almost entirely of material that was procured locally, it makes good use of natural light and ventilation, and all the water coming off the roof of the new structure is collected in a cistern. By some accounts, this is the first truly green, non-residential building in downtown Charleston. I’d be more than happy to have someone correct me about that. Can anyone offer other examples?
On The Battle for Recycling Sites, Allyson says,
I live in Cardiff in Wales and I personally think that we have pretty good recycling facilities. I started recycling in the late 80’s ( I lived in England then) when facilities were not so good and what we have to day is impressive in comparison. However, much of what we do have is in place because of Central government setting targets which I think is the key to all green issues. What I do is a drop in the ocean and really doesn’t make a huge difference but No Impact Man discussed it recently when somebody asked him WHY BOTHER?. We bother because together we all make a difference , especially people like No Impact Man by raising personal and government awareness.
