CARTA Bus System Stabilizes

CARTA bus

A successful mass transit system is a major component of a greener, more sustainable community. So I was glad to read this article in the Post & Courier that takes a look at the current state of CARTA, the Charleston area bus system, and declares that not only is the service finally stabilizing, but ridership is up. They’ve improved the service by adding morning and evening rush-hour routes for commuters, neighborhood shuttles, and more bus stop shelters for those rainy days.

This is great news as CARTA has faced tumultuous times in the recent past where it’s continued existence was in question. According to the article, the stabilization is attributed to increased marketing initiatives, sales tax funding, and of course insane gas prices. Whatever the reason, it’s great to see and I hope the success continues. Now if they would just add service to and from Summerville…

Service to and from Summerville…that’s a good one.

Have you seen some of the buses plastered with adds? They are gawd-awful looking, especially when you see one downtown, but I guess it helps pay the bills.

A friend of mine started a new job downtown this week and sent me this in an email on her second day of work …

“Also, a new experience riding the CARTA from SuperK in North Charleston. It was awesome. So many professional people traveling from the College, MUSC, etc… Be sure to pass the word to anyone living in the Summerville, Goose Creek, Moncks Corner areas.”

She’s using the new CARTA Express, which are those really nice white buses that have limited stops. Express routes are between James Island & North Charleston and Mt Pleasant & West Ashley, both with stops downtown.

I’ve ridden in the ordinary green ones and loved it! They drivers are extremely helpful (much more so than the route cards) and the buses are clean and cool.

Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!
