When I wrote about road trip recycling and other things last week, I forgot to mention that I finally purchased some carbon offsets for my vehicle. We’ve made major efforts to green up our summer traveling (recycling, cruise control, slower speeds, tire pressure, filling up at night, etc.), so offsetting our vehicle’s carbon emissions was a natural next step. If you aren’t sure what carbon offsets are, you can learn more here.
There’s a ton of information out there on carbon offset providers – enough to make your head spin. I went with CarbonFund.org because they are a nonprofit, they fund amazing projects, and they gave me the option choose where my money would go (I put it all into renewable energy projects.) To offset my vehicle, it cost about $50. So now I feel a little better about things until I can purchase a hybrid, and my summer road tripping got a little greener.

I’ve been researching this idea as a means to go green during my travels to Canada. Not only are you mitigating your carbon footprint, but you’re also benefiting form a tax deductible donation and supporting a create cause.
When you’re shopping or whatever and looking for a parking place, instead of circling and circling while you output dirty CO2 into the air, just pull into the first open space you some across. It may mean you walk a few extra steps, but it will also ensure that you drive less.
