Greater Charleston GreenMap

I went kayaking in Charleston harbor on Tuesday courtesy of Coastal Expeditions. While there, I stumbled upon the Greater Charleston GreenMap. It’s a traditional map of the greater Charleston area, but with all kinds of green locations highlighted.

It’s a map that identifies, promotes, and links eco and cultural resources. It’s about everyday choices, specific ways to spend your time and money to help the planet, to support local businesses and the local environment, and enjoy what is environmentally and culturally special in the greater Charleston area.

That’s good stuff. Unfortunately, you can only get the map by purchasing it. While I do admire their efforts, I would like to see this map/project be online, free, and shareable, rather than on paper, $10, and with limited reach. Nevertheless, it’s a great idea with an important goal - to support green activities in our area.

Thank you for mentioning the Greater Charleston GreenMap on your website. We just discovered Go Green Charleston and it looks like you are doing good work.

To address some of your comments – it is a plan of ours to incorporate an online version of our map. It took us a year and a half of hard work and grass roots efforts to create the Greater Charleston GreenMap. Our map is part of the larger Green Map system. (The Green Map system has more than 375 Green Map projects in more than 49 countries around the world. Please visit their website at http://www.greenmap.org)

We are a non-profit and environmental education is our main goal. We are donating a considerable amount of our maps to worthy causes and educational organizations, and seek to increase our reach as much as possible. Maybe your website will help us with this effort!

In addition to being able to pick up the map online at http://www.charlestongreenmap.org people can purchase copies around town at our supporters locations, as well as some of the non-profits we support, including:
    - Coastal Expeditions
    - Circular Church
    - Park Circle Coffee & Cream
    - The Sustainability Institute
    - Viriditas
    - The World Traveler Map & Globe Store

    Our Best to You,

Thanks for posting Pattersons! I love that your map is part of a global project - the green-o-sphere is huge indeed.

And I didn’t mean to slam you for your business model. I don’t want that to detract from how good I think the map is, and how much work you obviously put into it. I’m just a big fan of open source, freely accessible information - especially when it comes to education.

Chad - thanks for the reply. We’re working towards the same goal - a greener Charleston - and we both support education initiatives as a way to get there. Let’s find ways to support each others efforts. Please send an email to us at contact@charlestongreenmap.org.

Also, additional outlets around Charleston that sell the Greater Charleston GreenMap include:
    - The Charleston Angler
    - Half-Moon Outfitters (downtown store)
    - Barton Burwell Fishing & Hunting in Mt Pleasant

I have to agree with Chad here. If this project is in the name of education, it seems logical (and more cost efficient) to put the information online (for free) on the website you already have up and running. Then you could seek donations to cover costs of printing and distributing hard copies at ideal locations.
