Green News and Notes

Here are a few interesting and newsworthy links from the outer reaches of the green Web…

  • Freaked out by lead-painted Elmos and Dora the Explorer toys? Try environmentally friendly toys made of renewable corn-based bioplastics. The company responsible? The aptly named Green Toys.
  • Speaking of bioplastics, Target has announced a new biodegadable gift card. This is great to see but what took so long? And how about recycling or reusing non-bioplastic gift cards?
  • Check out The Green Glass Company. They’re turning discarded bottles into usable and really cool looking glassware.
  • Jack Bauer’s going green. Fox is pledging to reduce the total environmental impact of producing the upcoming season of 24 by using renewable green power on the set, running generators and production vehicles with biodiesel, using hybrid cars, and other efforts.
  • Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical commonly found in polycarbonate water bottles and other hard plastics, has been linked to female reproductive disorders according to a recent report. BPA is nasty stuff… go green strongly recommends avoiding it. The best plastics to use for consuming food and drink are 1, 2 and 5 (this is the number on the bottom in the recycling triangle). Polycabonates are 7.
