Mileage Mom

Chad has really been pushing me to blog about this goal I have:
On average, my car stays in the garage one day each week.

About two years ago, I realized that as a stay at home mom, I never stayed at home. I also began reading and hearing about peak oil production. I found myself in a position where I could set an example for my boys and lower my weekly mileage.

We have enjoyed it.

I love saying, “We haven’t been in my car since Saturday,” on Thursday. In the summer, it’s easy to do, and I stock days then, knowing that during the school year it’s trickier. We have a Schwinn bike carriage. The little guys love it, except maybe the strap-me-in part. Riding to the park, the pool, or a friend’s house is an easy alternative to driving around in suburban traffic.

Now, with preschool and holiday extravaganzas, I really have to plan for my car’s break. Again, I use the bike carriage to run my errands, only the seats become full of canvas bags. I feel confident trekking beyond my neighborhood without the boys, so on Saturdays I aim to keep my car in park.

My car is a 2003 Honda Accord with 35,000 miles, and she gets a day off once a week. I sure am jealous.
