Compost Pile Update
Posted by Chad Norman December 18th, 2007 .
Well, things have been going according to plan over at the Norman Family Compost Pile. It’s been a great experiment, and I’ve been getting advice from all over the place. And since sharing is what this blog is all about, here are some juicy tidbits:
- I need to water the pile more. It’s so dry down here in the Fall, and water helps keep the pile decomposing.
- I added a little manure and organic 10-10-10 fertilizer. I read that this will help add volume and get the process going quicker.
- We’ve settled into a routine of collecting kitchen scraps in used Cool Whip containers. Then once a day I take it out to the pile.
- If I don’t bury the kitchen scraps, critters will eat them.
- A few pumpkin seeds sprouted - this means my pile isn’t cooking yet.
- I’m still keeping small sticks out of the pile.
If you haven’t started a pile yet, it’s not to late. There are still plenty of brown leaves around, and you can even bag them for later. Either way, don’t miss this great opportunity to keep your food scraps out of the landfill, and generate 100% organic compost for your gardens.
