A great way to reduce your environmental impact is to practice a sustainable lifestyle – and that includes eating locally. Our meals travel an average of 1500 miles, and that’s a whole lot of trucks, boxes, coolers, and packaging – we can’t keep that up forever.
We’ve got it good here in Charleston – long growing seasons, good water supplies, and existing local farmers. We’ve also got mother ocean, and that means loads and loads of shrimp.
The South Carolina Shrimper’s Association has this great list of docks that sell locally caught shrimp. So whether you’re just trying to buy locally when you can, or going all 100-mile-diet on us, don’t forget to leverage the strengths of the Lowcountry by eating SC shrimp!

All the restaurants in McClellanville, SC serve fresh shrimp and seafood straight from the local docks. Anyone wanting to experience how good a 1-mile diet (food that’s traveled one mile from the market) can taste should stop in.
