Composting Update :: Now with Starbucks!
Posted by Chad Norman February 11th, 2008 .We’re now into February, and the compost pile I started last fall is really coming into it’s own. Here’s a quick update.
- The pile is about 2-feet deep now. And except for the edges, it has an even consistency throughout.
- Jen has started bringing home used Starbucks coffee grounds from the Longpoint Road location. They sit it aside for compost nuts like us, and it’s free for the taking - all you have to do is ask.
- The only thing that appears to have a hard time breaking down is melon rind, but it’s only a matter of time.
- My neighbors have been contributing organics, and this is very helpful. Without this supplement, I would be way too low on green material.
- I need to water the pile more - it’s too dry down here in the winter.
- I’m still trying to avoid things that take a while to break down: pine straw, sticks, palms fronds, etc.
Happy composting everyone (and get ready for Spring planting!)

I am looking to start a compost program here at my work. I would be greatful if you could provide me any startup advice.
Thanks so much!
