I recently ran across a local blog written by Dorn Moore chronicling the construction of their green house in the Oak Terrace Preserve neighborhood of Noisette. Our Little Green House is a great example of someone using technology and a little gumption to make a positive impact on our community.

We’ve finally made up our mind to build a little house here in Charleston, SC. The house and the neighborhood, Oak Terrace Preserve, lean towards “green”, so we’ll strive to give you a better idea of what that means in practice. Here are thoughts and notes from the construction of our house.

And while I’m not a fan of how developers casually throw around the term “Sustainable Community”, I love the results…especially when it comes to the businesses involved (they play a major role in driving this green evolution - support them!). The Moores are not only supporting a multitude of green suppliers and retailers (Verdi springs to mind), but they are inspiring others in the community to do the same. Cheers to that!

Proud mother that I am, I have also been able to share parts of my son’s (Dorn) with friends and others whose interest was either already there or peaked by the discussion of building and going green. It’s a wonderful concept and I hope the word spreads to more builders and retailers. Small efforts are evolving here in Virginia, but more needs to happen. Dorn and Sara’s knowledge has definitely made me more aware, made me read more, and question more. Since sustainability is more and more important to our future and our children’s future, I congratulate Verdi and all the companies, as well as the buyers, such as my son and daughter-in-law, who are endorsing and patronizing these folks.

It is interesting to know that people are making attempts at living ‘greener’ in the Charleston, SC area. I think that is a fantastic thing. I recently read an article in the New Yorker about an island in Denmark that is now 100% dependent upon sustainable energy sources, and mostly wind turbine generated energy. Does anyone know if larger community sustainability efforts are being made within the Charleston area? I know that there is a big uproar off of Cape Cod about off shore wind turbines, but it does look like things could move forward there, which could supply thousands of watts to that community and beyond.
I immediately thought of Charleston and am now very curious as to what efforts are being made for green building, community resource renewal, etc. within the Charleston area.

Please feel free to contact me if you know of any developments or people interested in making some things happen.
    Best,

Taylor - The Alternative Energy Meetup is a great way to network with the local sustainable energy movement. There is nothing big happening right now, but there was a speaker that talked about how wind harvesting is not a great option for the Lowcountry coast - there’s actually not that much wind! Though, generating energy from waves is still new, and we certainly have those.
