Recycle Your CFL Bulbs at Charleston County Recycling Convenience Centers

I just got word via my favorite local news site, The Digitel, that Charleston County Recycling now has the ability to collect and recycle compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). This is great news, as you probably know that CFLs are full of nasty stuff like mercury. Also, since a lot of Charleston’s trash is incinerated (putting all that nastiness into the air), this gives us a much needed alternative.
The catch (since there always is one) is that you have to take them to one of the convenience centers. Here is the complete list:
- Bee’s Ferry Road Convenience Center, 1344 Bee’s Ferry Road, West Ashley.
- Adams Run Convenience Center, Old Jacksonboro Road.
- Hollywood Convenience Center, 5305 Highway 165, Hollywood.
- Edisto Convenience Center, 2844 Highway 174, Edisto Island.
- Wadmalaw Convenience Center, 1558 Liberia Road, Wadmalaw Island.
- Charleston County Recycling Center, 13 Romney Street, Charleston.
- Maxville Road Convenience Center, 6380 Maxville Road, Awendaw, S.C. 29429
- River Road Convenience Center, 1775 River Road, McClellanville.

UPDATE: If you live East of the Cooper, you may notice those locations aren’t that convenient. If so, feel free to stop by Evergreen Concepts of Charleston or DwellSmart and they’ll take care of them for you. Thanks to all the readers who reminded us!

For convenience, you can also bring your used, unbroken cfl’s to DwellSmart, and we’ll consolidate and bring them to the Charleston County Recycling Centers for you. We’re at 615 Johnnie Dodds Blvd in Mount Pleasant (in between Eco Fitness and the Twin Rivers bowling alley).
This isn’t anything new. The Post and Courier reported this back on February 1st.
