We started this project to help bring out the greener Charlestonian in all of us. Technology is something we believe can help educate, connect, and inspire each of us to work towards a sustainable future, and this website is our nerdy way of helping the cause.
Like you, we’ve been trying to make choices that reduce our family’s impact on the environment. As we learned and explored this new way to live, we found that technology helped us - and thought it could help all of us. So in classic “see a need - fill a need” fashion, we launched this website on Earth Day 2007 to help bring it all together. We hope that by documenting our own green adventures and getting involved in the local movement, we might inspire others to do the same.

Why are you doing this?
We are passionate about many things in our lives, and the environment is no exception. As we progressed and made changes in our own lives, we had the urge to do something more. And because we are knee-deep in kids and day jobs right now, volunteerism and donation are available to us only in small doses. So, we decided to put our knack for technology and organization to use by starting this site. As the project grows, the mission remains the same: to help our community lead more sustainable lives.
How big is your staff?
Go Green Charleston was originally conceived by Chad Norman, Jennifer Norman, and Justin Baden, though Chad and Jen write most of the content. A few of our friends have been kind enough to contribute from time to time: Melanie Milonas, Jennifer Mathis, and Gregory Heath. All design, development, marketing, and administration of the website is handled by Chad.
Are you hardcore environmentalist granola-crunching treehuggers?
We’d like to think we are a fairly typical family, which is why we think this project can help others learn and change. We want to show everyone that by making incremental changes at home, a positive and long-lasting impact can be made without sacrificing. We didn’t do everything at once, and neither do you. If we all just do what we can, when we can, we can get the planet back on track.
What did you use to build the website?
The site is built and managed using the open-source software WordPress. The discussion boards are phpBB, and the Green Living Map was built using Google Maps. PhotoShop and DreamWeaver were used to design the theme and images. Visitors are tracked with Google Analytics. The domains were purchased from GoDaddy.com, and hosting is provided by DreamHost.com.
