This baby toy from Vulli would be a great gift for that green rug rat in your life, especially if they are teething. Sophie the Giraffe, as she has been known since 1961, is produced manually in France with 100% natural rubber derived from the hevea tree. Our 10-month-old girl definitely found it soothing, and was excited when it would squeak from time to time. You can definitely tell the rubber is natural, as it has a soft, almost moist feel to it. As an added bonus, it came in sustainable packaging. Green-wise, the only problem I see here is that it is imported all the way from France.

My friend Chris dropped off an organic cotton t-shirt from Cool Green Fish, and our son Graham really digs it. It’s super soft, just his size, and he got to break it in while fishing with Grandpa. Carrotmob was organized by Green Drinks Charleston and Carolina’s Eco-Unit, and helped raise $1600 to help the Queen Street Grocery green up their building. Carrotmob is a great way to support local business, the sustainability movement, and encourage community involvement (here’s our coverage). Enjoy this short film from The Cut Company:

Lowcountry Local First is asking local residents to take the 10% Shift Pledge and start buying more from local businesses. The goal is for local businesses, organizations, and families to shift an additional 10% of their annual spending to local businesses. And based on the results of our polls, buying locally is already on everyone’s mind – now it’s time to commit!

Come down to the 10% Shift Launch Party on July 10th at the Navy Yard at Noisette to begin the shift. Great food will be on hand, info on how to buy locally, and the cost to get in is only 10 cents!
