It’s been a while since we updated the Go Green Charleston Local Guide, and we’ve got a ton of new additions for you. Atlantic Green Conference Coming June 19-20

The Sustainability Institute and the Charleston Trident Home Builders Association are hosting the Atlantic Green Conference on June 19th and 20th. The 2-day event features 18 workshops covering nearly every aspect of green building. Titles include: Green Roof Systems, Advanced Lighting Solutions, Greening Historic Structures, and Green Infrastructure & LEED. The event also features keynote presentations by Michael Chandler and Bill Reed, as well as a green residential tour.

This looks like a great event for the green-focused builder or home improver, so be sure to check it out. Tickets are reasonably priced and available online.

The Race to End Waste Is On

Last October, College Park Middle School students began an environmental program focusing on conservation and sustainability. The Race to End Waste, launched by Complete Building Corporation, is part of an employee effort to give back to our community.

Homerooms in the Ladson school have been collecting recyclable materials all year — over 60,000 pounds so far — in an effort to win a field trip on the Spirit of South Carolina. Students have also been making recycled paper, donating reusable bags, and creating PSAs for younger kids.

Green Drinks Speakers to Discuss myEnergyLoan

At this month’s Green Drinks Charleston gathering, the topic at hand will be energy efficient mortgages. Daniel Island Realty has become Charleston’s first myEnergyLoan provider, and Jeff Cole and Gary Harwyn will be on hand to speak to their benefits.

Energy efficient mortgages sound interesting, as they help bundle in sustainable add-ons to the home during the loan process. This allows home buyers to quality for larger loans, which means better, more efficient homes. Local Green Idea Home Coming in June 2009

I recently saw that Charleston Style & Design Magazine will be coordinating the building of a Green Idea Home at Battery Island Row. This event will bring together sustainability experts from the Charleston-area to show off their game and demonstrate the latest green offerings. Cool!

This should be an interesting venue for our local green businesses, but I don’t think it’s going to be like the Sustainability Institute’s GreenHouse though. Still, it should be a positive event for the local green scene. Tracking…

The Sustainable Warehouse Needs a Home

I just stumbled upon what sounds like a great new local organization called The Sustainable Warehouse. This nonprofit’s mission is to keep usable items out of the landfill by organizing salvage sales here in Charleston. This is not only a great way to reduce garbage, but reduce the demand for new stuff. I mean, a huge part of this problem is our addiction to stuff – so reusing as much as possible can make a real impact.

The Sustainable Warehouse is in need of a permanant home. If you know of a warehouse facility that is available, please send them an email or call 843-532-9351. Also, if you have a project, call them to see if they can find what you need.

This is an inventive project…I can’t wait to see where it goes!

Local Blog about Building a Green House

I recently ran across a local blog written by Dorn Moore chronicling the construction of their green house in the Oak Terrace Preserve neighborhood of Noisette. Our Little Green House is a great example of someone using technology and a little gumption to make a positive impact on our community.

We’ve finally made up our mind to build a little house here in Charleston, SC. The house and the neighborhood, Oak Terrace Preserve, lean towards “green”, so we’ll strive to give you a better idea of what that means in practice. Here are thoughts and notes from the construction of our house.

And while I’m not a fan of how developers casually throw around the term “Sustainable Community”, I love the results…especially when it comes to the businesses involved (they play a major role in driving this green evolution – support them!). The Moores are not only supporting a multitude of green suppliers and retailers (Verdi springs to mind), but they are inspiring others in the community to do the same. Cheers to that!

Green Drinks Block Party at Mixson

That’s right, Charleston’s Green Happy Hour is on the road again after gathering at Go Green Night last month. I’on Group is hosting the party in the Mixson neighborhood in Park Circle. Coast Brewing Company will be on hand with free beverages, which will go nicely with the jazz and “hard hat” tours of available homes.

Lulan Sustainable Community Lecture Series

The good people over at Lulan Artisans will be sponsoring a free sustainability lecture series that kicks off next week! Thought leaders from around the country will be speaking on topics such as green building, community development, education, and global outreach. All presentations will be at the Charleston Visitors Center Theater, and there will be a reception and book signing after each.

On Monday, April 7, Eric Corey Freed is giving the first lecture on green building and remodeling for dummies – a topic I bet we would all find useful. Head on down to the Theater at 6:30 to catch this informative lecture. More details can be found at the Lulan website.
